Ultra lightweight umbrella
With the world getting digitalized and advanced over the decade, people grow accustomed to things being small and compact and even multi-functional as time goes. Mobile phones used to be big and chunky where people are finding it hard to carry around easily because of its size and weight. Therefore manufacturers worked hard in getting them smaller and lighter. Mobile phones were simply an electrical gadget to contact people on the move then. The functions were easy and simple. Thus within a few years, they were so thin and small that they fit easily into a person’s pocket. They had then become a big trend and were widely used all over the world within a decade. As large investment was put into the technologies, more functions were developed and we now rely on it to do many things.
Mobile phones are such a success that nowadays people cannot live without them and still for years to come. However there are many other things we human beings are unable to live without but we do not pay much attention to. Umbrella is one of them. Umbrellas have been around for hundreds of years where people use them as shelters when rain pours. Although many manufacturers have tried to add other functions onto of umbrellas, people mainly use them as shelters and nothing else. So instead they try to upgrade umbrellas by optimizing material parts. Umbrellas used to be big and chunky in the past. They were heavy because of the metal/wooden frame and big because of their mechanism. Carry umbrellas around during the rainy days can be quite tedious. So if it is just a light drizzle, some people are not even bothered to carry umbrellas. However people nowadays are more concerned about the environment. Knowing that pollution could get into our sky and fall as rain, people are concerned about getting in contact with rain and what consequence it may bring over time. They now use umbrella not only to shield away the acid rain, but also to protect themselves from the blaring sun.
To enable people to carry umbrellas with them more, manufacturers have been working hard in optimizing umbrella parts as much as they can. One of them is to make the umbrella lighter. Hence ultra lightweight umbrellas were introduced. Ultra lightweight umbrellas were developed so that people can carry them within their bags on a daily basis. These umbrellas are so light that they can be even lighter than your phone. There are a few ways to minimize the weight of an umbrella.
1. Change of materials in frame – many umbrellas are heavy because of the metal frames that they use. Just like airplanes, light metal parts are used in umbrellas to make the umbrella lighter. Plastic material parts such as carbon fibre shafts are also introduced to make the umbrella lighter. Plastic is light in weight compared to most metals. So the use of plastic material parts can dramatically reduced the weight of umbrella.
2. Introduction of light fabric – fabric has upgraded in leaps and bounds over the years too. The use of new raw materials and weaving methods have helped in developing lighter and tougher umbrella fabrics. Introduce of new umbrella fabric has reduced the use the coating on umbrella which can add a lot of weight onto the umbrellas.
The fast pace technology development over the last few decades has definitely created a lot of ideas for manufacturers over all kinds of industries to improve their own products. From something as high tech as mobile phones or something as simple as umbrellas have benefit from it. Their goals are the same, to make our lives easier and better.
